i'm going to let you into a small secret. i'm going to be in the autumn issue of studios magazine. that's not the secret. the secret is that i wouldn't let anyone past the door of my so called studio right at this moment in time. it is quite literally, a bombsite. i've got piles of paper i daren't throw away, a table piled high with computers and printers and god knows what else. i haven't seen the floor in weeks, and to cap it all, i've got a pile of ironing bigger than mount everest stacked in the corner. and the deadline for pics is july 1st. that's right, i've got less than three weeks to turn my bombsite into a beautiful coveted space. oh help... so i've got a lovely big worktop ordered for the back wall, i've been charideee shop shopping with my pal anna (click to see her lovely finds - i'm saving mine for another day...although actually, you can just see my new little teal midwinter bowl and a vintage plate in the 'after' pic above) and i've found a source of reasonable priced baskety things for my shelving units. i'll be showing my little updates/before afters as i go - first up is this mega chunky gold frame i bought for £10 from a charity shop a few weeks ago. i got two of them, one will be a mirror i think in matt black for the living room above the fireplace. i used a bright pink spray paint and reused a nasty piece of corkboard that was so beyond good looks i covered it with some totem paper. you'll see the pin marks on it, but i don't really care because i'm thrilled to bits with my half hour project! now i just need to make some cute little drawing pins...
oh yeah, and the totem paper is up in the shop, available in packs of two...

i am very impressed with your project in principle but amazed and slightly aghast that you would use a genuine old chunky gilt frame for it! only more so that you could get one for a tenner! We have looked for just such frames a couple of times recently and they cost A FORTUNE here in Edinburgh. must just be a supply/demand thing. If they were a bit cheaper I might be up for spraying them too!
the whole paper over corkboard thing is very in just now, I saw it somewhere else recently with vintage (or vintage style) maps. I think your paper would be a little less dangerous for me as i'd only end up staring at the maps and planning little journeys and wondering about place names. We currently have a euphemistically described guest room which is still full of boxes and mostly crap I can't throw away, appx one year on from moving in. It would be nice to actually *have* a guest room, and also I am going back to uni in september, so it needs a total over haul in the coming months as a study-cum-guestroom. I'll be watching this space for inspiration!

I am also a mad charity shopper (or op shopper as we call here in Aus) & many of the best pieces in my house are from one charity store or another ..
It's definitely true what they say, "ones junk is anothers treasure" !

So gorgeous! I've got a really similar frame here, waiting to do the same sort of thing. I was planning on spraying it in safe-but-fresh white, but I think you might have changed my mind. I love the idea of paper over your cork, too - have seen it done lots of times with fabric, but thinking yours is a less wrinkle-prone option. :)
Your blog is lovely, btw - I found it via your Flickr stream (the pink frame lured me over), and will definitely be back.
