it's finished. i'm done. literally just stitched the last 6 inches of binding down. this is HOT off the press. it looks great. i'm thrilled with it but at the same time i've looked at it too much...
interesting (or not so interesting) things i learned making this quilt include:
1) i'm now a total convert to the colour peach, i've decided it'm my new neutral
2) there's a funky smelling fabric in this quilt, the perfect shade of bright pink, but mum thinks i'm imagining it (the smell, not the fabric, that really does it exist. you can see it)
3) curves are fun! at least the way i do it which would probably have the quilt police in a pure panic
4) trying to stitch a single piece of fabric to a strip with a gazillion seams is a total bitch
5) there are surprising colour combos in this that should not work but totally do and they generally involve another of my least liked colours, olive/khaki green
6) i really dislike the colour brown and could not bring myself to use it in this quilt (ok, that's not strictly something i learned making this quilt, but i feel strongly about it)
It looks completely amazing, I really love the abstract bit on the left, next to the stripes. Some fabric does smell funky when new, I've noticed that, maybe it's the way it's manufactured?
ReplyDeletewow, Lu, that's a masterpiece! also red solids do tend to stink a bit.
ReplyDeleteYou've made an amazing quilt Lu. It's wonderful with such an array of strong colors coming together beautifully.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely stunning! I love it!
ReplyDeleteI love the fantastic colours of this quilt and have really enjoyed your updates photos.
ReplyDeleteHow many different colours have you used in total?
totally and utterly wonderful. and definitely better for not having brown in it! I can cope with a bit of brown here and there, but it would NOT look nice in this!
ReplyDeleteLu, WOW! What a stunning creation. A supreme pattern out of solids! When I saw the photo in your first post about this quilt, I assumed the scale. I thought it was bed-sized then! As your posts grew and the quilt grew, I was amazed at the creation unfolding. I currently do like brown, and am not big on peach, but thinking about it, they are just the light and dark extremes of the same color, right?
ReplyDeleteStunning! I adore this.
ReplyDeleteSo, what is this curved method you speak of? I've recently developed an obsession with improvising curves so I wonder how you are doing it?
This could be given to people as a lesson in color combinations. So great.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you left out the brown - it's perfect as it is x
ReplyDeleteLooks absolutely great! I am amazed at how quickly you finished this!I dislike brown too--and even maroony browns--have to force myself to use them or school bus orange/yellow. How do you do those curves?!
ReplyDeleteIt's a masterpiece, I love it!
ReplyDeleteFabulous!
ReplyDeleteI just saw this quilt over on the Long Thread blog and had to stop by! I am so, so inspired by this!! I am really into improvisational quilting right now myself (I am actually sharing my own improv today) and you just took it to a whole new level for me! Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteThere's a lot of awesome in that quilt!
ReplyDeleteStunning to infinity and beyond!!! And powerfully inspiring! Way to go, Lu!
ReplyDeleteAmazing quilt ~ my most favorite part are the curves on the bottom, the color combination is lovely!
ReplyDeleteThis is truly exceptional. I am so moved by this. I love the solids. So few people will dedicate a whole piece to them. Bravo and thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeletewow! your quilt is stunning!! sitting here with my jaw hanging open in awe. beautiful work, lu!
ReplyDeleteamazing!
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is amazing! It's one of those that I look at and secretly wish it was me who came up with the idea (ok, now it's not a secret anymore). I think it is new and special and really stands out and I love the brave use of colour! Praise!
ReplyDeletep.s. I also hate brown.
Spectacular use of color! This piece is amazing!!
ReplyDeleteLove it...Lime Green and Bubble Gum Pink.. they're smelling good to me.... organic piecing could be a great class.....
ReplyDeleteLovely, Amazing Quilt! Please share how you do your curves, pretty please! x
ReplyDeletebeautiful wonderful quilt. fabulous!
ReplyDeletebloomin wunnerful.
ReplyDeleteLove the funky smelling pink and the khaki!
You must share your fun curve piecing with us ... I'll divert the quilt police over at mine ...LOL!
This is sexy as - ps. I now follow you (not sure why I wasn't doing that anyway actually)
ReplyDeleteThis is insanely fantastic. I am SO loving it!
ReplyDeleteWow!
ReplyDeleteLove this quilt and going to suggest your blog to all of my friends.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing! I admire your ability to "wing it" in the piecing of this beauty. Improvisational quilting eludes me, but I love the look. I agree about the brown, I'm rarely a fan.
ReplyDeleteI just came across this quilt and enjoyed reading back through your posts as it evolved. Love where you let it take you! Around the same time you were making this, I made an all plains quilt that I dubbed Oodalolly. Our two quilts would most certainly be chummy!
