mini

~~work in progress~~ finished mini for festival of quilts. hand quilting in a naive way (the only way i can do it!) i'm loving this process despite it killing my fingers. haven't found a thimble i'm happy with yet and i'm too impatient to get this finished to bother trying anything new. i love the texture the threads are creating, it's more like embroidery or modern kantha quilting.

I struggled to find a thimble too, I couldn't get used to not being able to feel the needle when I pushed it through the fabric. I used masking tape for a while, wrapped round my finger with an extra bit where I push the needle through, and now I'm using some cushioned plasters from Sainsburys cut into pieces with a little pad of folded tissue underneath. All sounds a bit fiddly and if pushing the needle really hard I think it might poke through, but both methods seem to work pretty well for me and I stitch through fabrics painted with acrylics so they're often quite stiff :); 22 May 2012 at 10:17

I've been using this size of quilting stitch for a while now, on my more modern quilts, I use one ply of 21st Century hand dyed cotton and it's a beautiful combination - very relaxing to do. It's not sashiko, the stitch issmaller than that, but yes, certainly reminiscent of kantha quilts. They look lovely, Lu.; 22 May 2012 at 16:32

i've been to my LQS today & bought 2 sizes of clover thimbles, they're rubber with metal tips, as recommended to me on twitter (i think it was you quiltjane???) & they're very comfortable. i also bought a ton more solid fabric because i was getting bored of my colours, so expect to see more of these. i'm in love.; 22 May 2012 at 16:45
