work in progress finished mini for festival of quilts. hand quilting in a naive way (the only way i can do it!) i'm loving this process despite it killing my fingers. haven't found a thimble i'm happy with yet and i'm too impatient to get this finished to bother trying anything new. i love the texture the threads are creating, it's more like embroidery or
modern kantha quilting.
Lovely colourful creation - wish I could see it in person but not able to go to FoQ
ReplyDeleteNaive is good!
ReplyDeleteLet us know if you find a thimble you like. I've got a handstitching project right now and it is killing my fingers too. Love the colors. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteGreat mini quilt ~ your quilting really makes it wonderful!
ReplyDeleteits beautiful. truly eye catching
ReplyDeletehave you tried a leather thimble? It's the only kind I can use without getting a blister.
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous, by the way!
I think it looks really cool!
ReplyDeleteOooh it's gorgeous, had the same raw, bruised finger tips over here too, Amy (LMQG) recommended a plaster on the finger tip - haven't healed enough to try it out yet though!
ReplyDeleteLove! (Don't you wonder how quilters are able to accomplish tiny stitches? Utility stitch is all I can do too- glad I like the texture and a primitive look of big stitches!) :D
ReplyDeleteHave you tried one of these Clover Natural Fit Leather Thimble? I got one from cotton patch and its perfect for me. Your quilt truly is wonderful, I love it.
ReplyDeleteThat looks gorgeous! Love the handd quilting! Your own style is always best =D
ReplyDeleteI'm hosting a new swap over at my blog if anyone is interested please pop over for a look =D

Wow - and I thought this quilt was amazing BEFORE you did the hand-stitching! It really adds a lot - just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWow, I love that quilting style. They look fantastic.
ReplyDeleteLove it! :)
ReplyDeleteI struggled to find a thimble too, I couldn't get used to not being able to feel the needle when I pushed it through the fabric. I used masking tape for a while, wrapped round my finger with an extra bit where I push the needle through, and now I'm using some cushioned plasters from Sainsburys cut into pieces with a little pad of folded tissue underneath. All sounds a bit fiddly and if pushing the needle really hard I think it might poke through, but both methods seem to work pretty well for me and I stitch through fabrics painted with acrylics so they're often quite stiff :)
Nah, I can't do thimbles either. I just develop lovely 'seggs' on my finger tips!
ReplyDeleteI've been using this size of quilting stitch for a while now, on my more modern quilts, I use one ply of 21st Century hand dyed cotton and it's a beautiful combination - very relaxing to do. It's not sashiko, the stitch issmaller than that, but yes, certainly reminiscent of kantha quilts. They look lovely, Lu.
thank you everyone!
ReplyDeletei've been to my LQS today & bought 2 sizes of clover thimbles, they're rubber with metal tips, as recommended to me on twitter (i think it was you quiltjane???) & they're very comfortable. i also bought a ton more solid fabric because i was getting bored of my colours, so expect to see more of these. i'm in love.
Love it. Will keep an eye out at FoQs.
ReplyDeleteI have one of those new clover one but haven't used it yet, no others have been comfortable so I keep forgetting it.
