moda blog hoppety hop & giveaway!

the moda designer blog hop theme this time around is all about the places we live, and as usual i've rambled on, so i hope you enjoy!

me! hiding my bingo wings on the hottest day of the year
if you're new to this blog, hello, my name is lucie summers (generally known as lu) and i live on a farm with my farmer husband and 2 boys, an anti social ginger cat and a fairly scruffy looking chicken in suffolk which is in east anglia - if you can picture a map of the UK, the bit that sticks out to the right like a big round bum - well, that's east anglia and i live roughly in the middle of it. i'm a pattern designer and a screen printer and i also design for moda - my new line, 'summersville sping' is due out in february.
i live in a tiny little village (pop: 550) that has one pub and one hotel and NOTHING else so you have to go a little further afield to do anything at all...shopping, eating out, going to the cinema...it's all a car journey away.

the village pub
i grew up in a small town called mildenhall which is 2 miles from the village where i live now. it is mostly famous for its US air base. it has the largest runway in europe (i think!) and after the opening ceremony of the london olympics the other week, michelle obama flew home from there. when i was a kid, mildenhall air base was host to the largest airshow in europe, but after 9/11 it was stopped for security reasons. although we live quite rurally, the base can be seen over the river across the fields from my back door. i've grown up with sounds of aircraft over my head!

mildenhall is also famous for the mildenhall to melbourne air race that took place in 1934. it was a huge deal back then with all the glamourous 'flying stars' of the era taking part, it's worth looking up on google, there are some amazing stories. my brother nick is obsessed with it and collects air race memorabilia, he's become quite the expert and curated an exhibition for the local museum a few years ago. my favourite story is about the lady who asked to travel on board a bi-plane to visit australia and spent the entire time knitting!

poster for the air race
in 1942, the mildenhall treasure was unearthed by a farmer in a field. It was the biggest ever treasure trove found at the time and there was all sorts of controversy over it.  roald dahl wrote a brilliant kids book about it with amazing illustrations by ralph steadman. definitely worth a look.

piece of treasure!
roald dahl's book
nobody except my closest friends know what i do for a living. if people at the school gates ever ask they usually say stuff like "ohhhhh, my mum likes scrap booking" (?) or "my friend is really crafty!" or they ask me to put a new zip in their jeans. sigh.

win some summersville. but not the random horse, he's mine :)
i hope you've enjoy hearing about my hometown...now i'd like to hear about yours! & so i've got a giveaway for you - to win a fat quarter bundle of my entire original 'summersville' line all you need to do is tell me whereabouts in the world you live and what your hometown is called. this giveaway is open to anyone anywhere so get commenting :) and remember to keep on hoppin'!

OMG!! I so want to win this one so bad! I love that fabric so much :) Well, my hometown is smaller yet, Tiro OH - population of about 250. Yep that's right, super small. But I love it, it is my home sweet home. I know everybody, and we all try to take care of one another. Anyone and everyone has your back in this town. And it's so nice at Christmas time we all get together and make sure there are absolutely no kids doing without. I am blessed to live here and I love it. Thank you so much for the chance to win, your kindness is greatly appreciated, and the person that wins this awesome fabric is the luckiest person ever!

Thanks for sharing! I grew up in a town in NJ called Waldwick.

I've been hearing more about your hometown lately as I have a nephew & his family stationed there now. There little girl got to have her picture taken with Michelle Obama when she was there. Looks like a lovely place to live. The city I live in is Grand Island, NE. I was born in Munich, Germany when my father was in the Air Force. He was career military, so we lived all over the US & I never felt like I really had a hometown. My mother was from Nebraska, so we ended up settling here. Our city has 3 quilt stores which is unusual for a town this size. They all carry different types of fabrics, so what one doesn't have the other probably does. Love you fabric & your pattern.

Lynelle said...

It sounds like I where I live, Lakeland Florida - smack dab in the middle of florida - is not nearly as quaint and charming as your town!

Hi! We currently live in Fayetteville, North Carolina, home to Fort Bragg (Army).

Lu,
As I have never ventured outside
the USA or Canada, was thrilled to
learn about you and your hometown,
don't have a clue what bingo wings
would be, that just adds to the
facination of those around the world.
Thank you for sharing. I live in
a small town of Cambridge, Minnesota
north of Minneapolis Minnesota by
an hour, traveling by car. We as
the saying goes roll up the sidewalks at about 8pm and the town
quiets down, until the next day. Not much happens here, to get excited about. Thanks for the chance to win, and happy quilting.

I grew up in Toronto, Ontario, but now I live in a small community 20 minutes north of Victoria, B.C. on Vancouver Island. Lots of farmland nearby, very quiet with views of the mountains off in the distance. Loved hearing about your hometown of Mildenhall. Roald Dahl is a favourite author of both myself and my husband, and Ralph Steadman's illos are fabulous.

I live in Vancouver, WA and we have the longest running airport in the U.S. called Parsons Field..your brother should come visit our museum, he would love it. In addition, a mere 50 miles away is the museum that contains the spruce goose, the largest wooden plane built. Summersville was my favorite print this summer!

Thanks for sharing your hometown; it must be fascinating at times. Beautiful Salt Lake City, Utah is my hometown. It's known for the wonderful Mormon Tabernacle Choir; Rio Tinto Bingham Canyon Copper Mine (made the medals for the London Olympics this year); Real Salt Lake Soccer Team; and the Utah Jazz Basketball Team. And, historic Gardner Village is the home of one of the best quilt shops in the state - Pine Needles! Thanks for sharing your cute pattern and Summersville Spring. Thanks also for sponsoring the rather awesome fabric giveaway!

Hi Lu. I live in Canada just outside of Edmonton, Alberta. (My husband is a soldier and we love on the military base just outside the city limits.) I consider Edmonton my home town. We used to own a house in the city but the military moved us away and when we came back housing prices had gone sky high. Speaking of sky high... we have a very long runway on our base too. I think it's the longest in North America. It's and emergency landing site for the space shuttle.

OMG, I used to live in Bicester when my husband and I were there in the 90's and he was in the USAF. He worked at RAF Upper Heyford and sometimes RAF Coughton! As I recall, he went to Mildenhall for a couple of weeks too! I'd love to go back to England some day. It was so easy to get around with the buses and trains; I never did learn how to drive on the left-hand side of the road.
Your fabric's really cute!

Love your summersville fabric. I live in St. Cloud, MN and I love that we have all four seasons. We had a beautiful, hot, summer and we are looking forward to a colorful fall.

Pam said...

Well, my hometown is Newport News VA. It's got lots of scenic views of the James River, but also lots of traffic because it's only 4 miles wide, and 22 miles long.

Michala said...

I'm from Walney Island which is just off the coast of Barrow-in-Furness , which is unfortunate. Walney is lovely though. It's 11 miles long and a mile wide, although a lot of either end is nature reserve. It's home to the Natterjack Toad. We also have an aerodrome where you can go gliding, and host the national kite surfing championships each year. It is the windiest lowland site in the country after all fact fans! Oh and the best bit, is that Thomas The Tank Engine was based on our island, though the Vicar who wrote it renamed it Sodor. He was Reverand Aubrey and he was our local vicar at St. Mary's church, but that was way before my time. I hope this helps me win!

It's basically a group of farmers that all live next to each other. There's one building that is the post office/gas station/ convenience store. And there's a firetruck parked there too so I guess it's the fire station as well.

At the moment I live in a village in the North East of England, near Whitby. I don't have a home town as I was a military child (my Dad was at Bentwaters when I was a child) but I guess Framlingham is where we lived for the longest time when I was growing up so that'll have to do. I was born in Hyannis MA but left when I was 6 months old and have never been back!

And I thought I lived in a small town--population 15,000. It's called Vernal, Utah but is a wonderful place to raise a family. I enjoyed hearing about the lady who knitted on her plane ride to Australia--I do the same thing while we travel but I hand quilt or sew the binding on a quilt.

I currently live in 2 towns - my house is in Mitchell, Ontario Canada and my home is in a very, very small town called Morpeth about 2 hours away. We are in transition from Mitchell to Morpeth. The house in Morpeth has been in my family since 1863 and I have owned it since my Mom died a number of years ago. Now that my hubby is "apprenticing for retirement" we are going to take the leap and go back to the place I grew up and the only place I can truly call home. Wish me luck, it will require a huge renovation - I hope I can squeeze in some time for me once it all gets started!

I grew up in a small town called Weymouth. Now it's best known as the home of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing events. I kept thinking of happy days as a child messing about in boats and rock pooling where the Gold medals were decided.

Where the National Sailing academy is now, there used to be a Naval Air Station, and the Dockyard used to be full of royal Navy ships. I grew up to the sounds of helicopters flying about and the Thursday War (Gunnery and tactics practice. There was also Navy Days in July.

Do I get extra bragging rights because my Mum is a yacht measurer and was selected as one of the Paralympics event measurers? LOL!

I'm from Dunbar, which is east of Edinburgh in Scotland. This first bit confuses people as they think of Edinburgh as being on the east coast...how can you go east of it? Well Edinburgh is on a Firth and so the sea is actually to the north of it. Dunbar is on a bump, due east. East of Dunbar is indeed the sea.

Dunbar is regularly crowned Sunniest Town in Scotland which earns it the nickname 'Sunny Dunny'. Sometimes St Andrews or North Berwick win it though, grr.

Dunbar has two famous sons, John Muir the conservationist who was a founder of the original environmental movement in the US which saw the creation of national parks. He left Scotland aged 9, but never forgot his roots. I used to work in the museum inside his birthplace.

The other son , Robert Wilson, is one of the people credited has having come up with the propellor screw...that's the big propellor on the back of ships, as far as I know.

Final interesting nugget....the castle in Dunbar was pulled down by parliament because it was too good a strong hold, and they were concerned about it being used against them!

My home is in Mooresville, IN. Because of my husband's work, we move often so I really don't feel like I have a hometown anymore but the village I used to live in was Wickembrook, just south of Bury-St. Edmunds. When we lived there, we went to Mildenhall a number of times and everytime we bought groceries in Tesco, we were asked if we were from the base. Everyday I long to be back in England. I hope you read this, I love the coincedence. Anyway, thanks for the give-away. I love your designs.
